MODESTO - Police arrested a man suspected of being involved in a 2016 homicide Tuesday afternoon.
The homicide happened on August 19th, 2016. At about 2:20am police received a report of gunfire heard in the area of Prescott and Rumble Roads, and moments later several reports of a collision on Prescott Road.
Emergency crews arrived and located a 1998 Honda Civic with what police describe as "catastrophic damage." Police say the vehicle was found to be stolen and looked to be struck by gunfire.
Mark Esparza, the 17 year old driver, was found ejected from the vehicle near the crash scene. First Responders attempted to save his life, however he died at the scene.
During Esparza's autopsy, investigators determined that he suffered a gunshot wound as well as injuries from the crash.
Search warrants were served by detectives in October on Alta Way in Modesto and last week on Jade Place in Manteca. No arrests were made at the time, however a warrant was issued for 33 year old Scott Bates Jr.
Officers saw Bates on McHenry Avenue Tuesday and placed him under arrest. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on charges including homicide, being a felon in possession of a firearm, committing a felony while out on bail, and other enhancements. He is being held without bail.
