STANISLAUS COUNTY - Authorities investigated the discovery of a body on the side of a road Wednesday afternoon.
At about 2:30pm authorities received a 911 phone call from a county works employee who was operating a tractor cutting grass on Wellsford Road. The 911 caller indicated that they had found a body on the side of Wellsford Road, just north of Parker Road.
Deputies arrived and closed off the 1700 block of Wellsford Road with crime scene tape.
"We did find what we believe to be an adult," said Sergeant Anthony Bejaran, a Sheriff's Office spokesman. The age and gender of the person could not be determined. Bejaran said a forensic pathologist would have to examine the body.
Authorities did not know how long the body had been on the side of the road. It was located between some grass and berry bushes.
"CHP is also here with us," Bejaran said. "There is the potential that this was possibly a traffic collision."
Bejaran explained that CHP officials would assist early on should the pathologist determine that the cause of death was due to a traffic collision.
The sheriff's office takes several missing persons reports during the week, but Bejaran was unsure if there were any for that area. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
