Fundraiser Established for Child Who Drowned at Knight’s Ferry

KNIGHTS FERRY - A fund raiser via GoFundMe was established for Matilda Ortiz, the child lost in the Stanislaus River Sunday afternoon.

The 5 year old child was recovered after a nearly four day search by volunteer divers Wednesday afternoon who were experienced with swift water rescue. Her body was located not far from the Knights Ferry Campground.

Matilda was visiting the park with family. Relatives of the child indicated she wanted to dip her toes in the water. Shortly after, the child fell in. One relative had a hold of the child, but the current pulled her away.

Rescue crews searched in the following days as conditions remained unsafe in the water. A boat and helicopter were used to search the waterway, as family and friends continued their efforts by using ropes to pull away branches and snags from the river’s edge.

Matilda, who suffered from autism, was recovered about 4:45pm Wednesday. A fundraiser via GoFundMe was established to raise funds for funeral arrangements. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by CLICKING HERE.
