Kidnapping Suspect Shot, Killed After Taking Hostage at Gunpoint

MODESTO - Authorities are investigating a fatal deputy involved shooting that took place late Wednesday night.

Deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriffs Office were investigating a kidnapping/false imprisonment case when they located their suspect near the intersection of Vine and Madison Streets.

A Ramey Warrant was obtained for the suspect, identified as 52 year old Stephen Murray. As authorities observed Murray, they saw he had the victim in this incident with him.

Deputies attempted to take Murray into custody, at which time he took the victim hostage with a gun. At least one deputy opened fire, striking Murray. The victim was unharmed, Murray died at the scene. Authorities recovered his weapon, which was determined to be a replica firearm.

Detectives with the Modesto Police Department responded to investigate the incident. The Stanislaus District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff Internal Affairs also responded to investigate.
