MODESTO - Two pedestrians suffered serious injuries Monday afternoon after fleeing from a store after shoplifting.

Shortly after noon, Modesto Police officers responded to a report of two pedestrians struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Standiford and McHenry Avenues. Early indications suggest both pedestrians were down on the ground, injured.

Police closed off both directions of Standiford and Sylvan Avenues before McHenry as officers examined the scene. There were bags and belongings scattered in the westbound lanes. On the sidewalk clothing and shoes as well as blood could be seen.

According to police spokeswoman Heather Graves, the two pedestrians were fleeing a store across the street after shoplifting. The two were attempting to steal alcohol and ran across the street to avoid capture when they were struck.

The pedestrians were only identified as a man and a woman. The man was listed in stable condition. The woman was listed as critical.

Graves said the two could face charges should the store seek prosecution, and further investigation was pending.
