TURLOCK – A man was arrested by authorities after shining a laser at the Stanislaus County Sheriff Helicopter Wednesday night.

Shortly after 11:00pm personnel on board the Sheriff Air Support Unit communicated that they were continuously being struck by a green laser from the ground. They were able to guide deputies and Turlock Police Officers to a residence on the 900 block of Chestnut Street.

Initially, the person shining the laser fled into a home, but then came out and was arrested by authorities. He also turned over the laser, which appeared to have a firearm attachment.

Officials at the scene related that the act is very dangerous for the operators of the helicopter, potentially interfering with aircraft instrumentation, possibly blinding or disorienting the pilot, and causing permanent eye damage. The crime is listed under California Penal code 247.5.
