MODESTO – A fire at a two story home near downtown Modesto destroyed the residence late Friday afternoon.

The fire was dispatched at about 5:20pm to a home near the intersection of 3rd and I Streets. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke and fire conditions from the home. Flames extending from the home were threatening surrounding houses and had caught several vehicles on fire, so crews requested a second alarm.

Area roadways were closed by police to allow firefighters to connect to water hydrants. An ambulance was placed on stand-by in case of any injury, but at publication time there were none reported.

Fire investigators responded to the scene to determine the cause. Red Cross representatives were also called to assist those displaced by the fire.
