MODESTO – Officials credited collaboration between agencies and police technology, leading to the arrest of a man wanted in connection to an early morning shooting in Turlock.
At about 3:30am officers with the Turlock Police Department were called to a report of a person shot near Lander Avenue and Highway 99. The victim, identified as 18 year old Jose Tamayo-Morales of Modesto, was found with a gunshot wound. An officer began providing aid and CPR, but the victim died at the scene.
Detectives investigating the shooting learned that the victim was involved in an altercation with the suspect. Through witness statements and the collection of physical evidence, the suspect and his vehicle were identified.
License plate reader technology was able to help track down the suspect, and later in the early afternoon, the Modesto Police Department located and stopped 59 year old Troy Cannon near the area of Yosemite Boulevard and Riverside Drive. He was booked into jail on murder charges.
“With the aid of license plate reader technology, our detectives were able to swiftly gather critical information and locate the suspect,” Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden said in a press release. “This case serves as a powerful reminder of how technology is reshaping law enforcement, helping us protect the public and resolve cases more quickly.”
Turlock Police credits the collaboration between Modesto and Ceres Police Departments in their assistance for the investigation.
