CERES – A smoldering sulfur fire closed down Service Road Monday, prompting officials to issue a shelter in place warning.

According to officials with the Modesto Fire Department, about 50 firefighters responded to the report of a fire at a farm supply company on the 600 block to East Service Road. A smoldering fire was said to be burning a large amount of fertilizer grade sulfur inside of a 40,000 square foot concrete warehouse. Firefighters and on site staff worked to contain the smoldering product. By the afternoon, a white cloud could still be seen coming from the building.

Fire officials said there was no immediate threat to life in the surrounding area, but urged those nearby to close their doors and windows and shelter in place.

Service Road was closed between Morgan and Crows Landing Roads.
