MODESTO – Several areas along Highway 99 covered in abandoned homeless encampments and overgrown brush were cleared Tuesday.

The efforts were focused on the areas between Carpenter Road and Tuolumne Boulevard.

The approval to begin the clean up process was given Tuesday and is expected to last throughout the week. Several camps and piles of litter could be found under overcrossings and on embankments.

Authorities said the cleanup was expected to last through Friday, and motorists should expect delays in the area while crews work.
