SAN LEANDRO – The pursuit of a stolen vehicle involved in a Manteca homicide ended in a fiery crash that killed two occupants early Monday morning in the Bay Area.

According to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted to the vehicle that had been carjacked on Sunday in the City of Oakland. They pursued the vehicle at about 1:45am from the City of Hayward, trying to stop the car near the Interstate 880/238 interchange.

As the driver of the suspect vehicle exited the highway and entered San Leandro, police officers tried to deploy a spike strip near Davis and Preda Streets. The driver swerved around the spikes, causing a loss of control to the car resulting in a head on crash with a tree.

The vehicle began to smoke and catch fire. Authorities were able to remove a 14 year old girl from the back seat of the car who had been caught by her foot. The two occupants of the front were unresponsive and trapped and were unable to be removed before the car became fully engulfed.

Firefighters responded to extinguish the flames, but the two occupants were deceased. They both remain unidentified. The teen was taken to a hospital for care. A firearm was located in the remains of the vehicle.

The homicide took place Sunday night in the City of Manteca. At about 10:00pm police responded to a shopping center near the intersection of West Yosemite Avenue and Union Road for a report of a person shot. The victim, a woman, had stumbled into a gymnasium where she collapsed and died.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide is encouraged to contact Detective Garret Morrison at (209) 456-8212 or gmorrison@manteca.gov.
